From mesh to model: advancing CFD simulation work in RevHydro

CFD Simulation Work

As part of RevHydro’s work on draft tube flow control, the HES-SO team is contributing to the development of high-fidelity numerical models for hydraulic turbine flow analysis.

Recent progress has focused on preparing the turbine mesh, a key step before running detailed CFD simulations. A reliable mesh is essential for accurately representing the complex flow structures that occur inside hydraulic turbines and draft tubes, especially under operating conditions where pressure pulsations can become more pronounced.

This modelling work will support future simulation studies, including analysis of part-load operation and the preparation of mesh convergence studies. These activities are important for ensuring that numerical results are robust and can later be compared with experimental data produced within the project.

By strengthening the link between digital modelling and flow control design, this activity supports RevHydro’s broader ambition to improve the flexibility, stability and sustainability of hydropower turbines.
