The objective of this work package is to develop and validate an innovative Runner Flow Control (RFC) system to extend the operational range of Francis turbines while reducing mechanical stress and fatigue. The work package focuses on the analysis of unsteady flow phenomena occurring under off-design operating conditions and their impact on runner lifetime.
Numerical simulations and experimental investigations will be performed to characterize runner fatigue and assess the effectiveness of the RFC concept. High-fidelity numerical models and experimental test rigs will be used to design, optimize, and validate the RFC solution, with the aim of increasing turbine flexibility, reliability, and lifetime in existing hydropower installations.
