Using CFD modelling to support draft tube flow control design

The LTU team is exploring the use of StarCCM+ to model flow behaviour in hydraulic turbines as part of RevHydro’s draft tube flow control activities.

This modelling work aims to support the development and optimisation of the Draft Tube Flow Control system by improving understanding of the hydraulic conditions that contribute to pressure pulsations. Numerical simulations can help identify how flow patterns evolve inside the turbine and draft tube, especially during flexible operation.

The simulation models developed through this activity will also complement the experimental work carried out in the laboratory. By combining CFD modelling with future measurement data, the project can build a stronger basis for evaluating draft tube flow control strategies.

This work contributes to RevHydro’s overall goal of supporting more flexible, reliable and sustainable hydropower operation.
